Can I Drink?

A man at a 12-step meeting today had questions about whether he was alcoholic. It seems that he'd been sent there by the courts for driving under the influence. According to him, he had an extreme DUI because his alcohol levels were so high.

Part of the penalty for his driving offense was that he had to spend 10 days in jail, attend a DUI diversion program, and have an interlock device on his car to blow into before he could operate the vehicle.

He hadn't drunk for some six months because he was attending DUI classes. And he'd signed a contract saying he wouldn't drink while attending those classes. Plus, he had the interlock device so he wouldn't be able to operate his car even if he drank the night before.

But he said the first thing he was going to do when his contract was up was drink a few beers and find out if he could stop. He said that way he’d know for sure.

Someone commented that those are the kinds of questions a so-called “normal” drinker wouldn't ask. If someone’s concerned about how much they drink - or if they can drink again – they might already have the answer to their question.

We know he's going to find out.
