When you're trying to help people rebuild their lives they often fail. We had this experience recently when a client we worked with for about nine months finally chose to leave rather than accept consequences for his behavior.
This client came with a history of drinking and living on the fringe. His family was frustrated with him. He had no resources. His health was bad. His social skills are such that he had difficulty in finding work.
Finally, because he exhibited a willingness to stay sober, we put him to work at TLC. However, each job we gave him didn't work out. At the last job he had at TLC he was running his own private store and operating a loansharking business. When he finally threatened someone who owed him money we decided to transfer him to another facility.
Rather than move to the new facility he left. It was sad to see him go after spending so much time and effort in helping him change his life. But the reality is that life teaches lessons.
This man will meet himself again – regardless of where he goes.
