Paradox of Surrender...

The topic at last night’s aftercare meeting was "surrender." It's one we often hear at 12-step meetings and a recurring theme at TLC. For many of us surrender is an alien concept. Some of the macho among us look upon surrender as weakness. But those of us who have surrendered realize that giving up control is a step into real power.

Is this a paradox, an oxymoron? How do we surrender control to win? But for those of us who have surrendered it's a wonderful catharsis, almost blissful, to realize we no longer must battle to prove we can successfully drink and drug. However - after we get this first part - where do we go from here? After all, we're no longer drinking or drugging. What else is there to surrender?

But the reality is that – for most of us – there are many things to surrender. Once we get sober and are trying to live in serenity we must also surrender the idea that we're in charge. We no longer control the world. We are no better than others. We’re not the one with the answers. We finally yield to the idea that we are simply part of the universe.

Then we flow with life and enjoy the wonderful world our Creator provided us.
