A client who’d been living in our sober apartments for quite some time gave notice that he’s leaving to resume life in another state with family members. It is especially gratifying to see this man complete the transition back into society because he came to us from prison a few years ago after spending some 30 years locked up.
One of our managers recalled that when the client was given the keys to his own apartment – as he entered the transition stage of our program - he was so emotional that he broke down in tears. For him it was a dream come true because for all of his adult life he’d never had his own place.
While many of our clients don’t succeed in staying sober and rebuilding their lives there are enough stories like this man’s to make it all worthwhile. It is a great privilege to provide an opportunity for others to change their lives.
And the interesting part of the process is that we’re never able to predict who will make and who will revert to their former lifestyle. Like so many of those who succeed, this man had a burning desire to do something different with his life. That desire, coupled with a deep sense of gratitude, made all the difference.
