Rewarding

Yesterday a disabled former client stopped by for a visit, a man who’d stayed at TLC for over eight years. It was a rewarding to see him because when he came to us he was facing a 30 year prison term in another state for holding hostages at gunpoint in a hotel room while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

It was an involved case, but the lawyer established that he’d suffered brain damage from a head injury when he fell down while drunk prior to committing the crime. As a result, the court released him to our program. But they monitored him for several years before finally releasing him from probation. As part of the process our staff provided regular progress reports to his attorney and the court.

It was good to see this man again, now sober and living on his own in a nearby apartment complex. Helping him deal with his legal issues during his early recovery was somewhat challenging for our staff.

But the reward comes from seeing a man living in freedom and sobriety – and to be able to say that we were part of that process.

  1. Stories like these carry me through burnout days and make it all worthwhile. The other day I talked with a young man who was excited to be headed to one of your facilities in Arizona. It wasn't me that referred him but I recommend TLC whenever I can.

Happy, healthy, serene and sober holidays to you, your staff, and your loved ones, John!
