Positive affirmations - uplifting self-talk – are one way to get inspired each morning before we start our day. This isn't something I do every day. But when I do, the day works out much better.
We all give ourselves affirmations, but sometimes they're not positive. We might wake up in the morning with a backache, or a headache. And of course, pain makes the day seem even more challenging. We have work to do and don’t feel like putting our feet on the floor. We have a pile of stuff waiting on our desk, but just a day to meet our deadline. Or we're in the middle of a busy Christmas and we don't have time to run all our errands. We're overwhelmed. We don't know if we can do it.
However, we can tell ourselves we’ll do our best. Maybe we can delegate work to someone else. If we have the mindset that we'll do what we need to do somehow we’ll find a way.
There's a reason a coach gives players a pep talk. He's doing the same thing we can do if we want to have a great day. He's giving them a series of positive affirmations to make them believe they’re an invincible scoring machine. He pumps them full of visions about crossing the finish line. He gets their hearts beating and fills them with fire. And that's the same thing we must do to ourselves.
If we tell ourselves today sucks - it will. If we say we don't have time to get everything done we'll prove ourselves right.
Or we can say "this is going to be a beautiful day, and I’ll get everything done." Or, "I'm going to have a wonderful day no matter what challenges I face."
While being positive is no guarantee, at least we’ll feel better while going about our day.
