Breakthrough

As a counselor it can be frustrating to spend a lot of time with a client – then see them revert to old behavior. Conversely, it is refreshing to see a client pick up tools in counseling and use them in the real world.

It happened this week when a client who'd been working with frustration and anger issues reported on her success. She'd been undergoing some frustration with her employer.  Her normal reaction would've been to have a few quick drinks followed by an angry outburst - or maybe the reverse.

But instead she took a few deep breaths. Then she summoned some ideas she'd heard while in counseling and realized she was powerless over the situation.

She said her husband was amazed that she didn't create turmoil in the house. In fact, it appeared to make him uncomfortable. His role normally was to calm her down and comfort her after these angry outbursts.

As she told this story she had a glow on her face. This breakthrough experience made her believe the time she'd been spending in treatment was worthwhile.

And though I try to keep emotional distance from clients it's pleasing when they share their successes.
