Abusive Relationships

Many clients, female and male, report sexual abuse in their childhood. Most attribute their substance abuse and alcoholism to early trauma. It seems unusual for a female client to not have experienced this type of abuse prior to sinking into alcoholism or drug addiction.

And many of these women also report current relationships where they’ve been physically and emotionally abused. And the interesting thing is they sometimes came to their current relationship from a prior abusive relationship.

Logic would say that someone wouldn’t continue to get into these types of relationships. Why would they? However, the psychology of these unions is complex and illogical. Many of these women feel guilty and even take responsibility for their involvement with the abuser. They have such poor self-worth that they believe this is what they deserve. It usually takes extensive counseling to change the situation.

Because TLC is a peer driven program we aren’t qualified to provide counseling to women with this history. However, we do refer them to resources where they can obtain counseling.

Because some have ex-boyfriends or husbands who might stalk them, we provide a safe environment where they can work on their recovery.  We provide a including night security, motion sensor lighting, and security cameras and don't publish the addresses of our women's houses.
